An All Inclusive That Kept Its Address

Most all inclusive hotels in Jamaica are built away from towns, behind a gate, on a road nobody walks down. S Hotel does the opposite. It stands on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard in Montego Bay, on the strip where the bars, the craft market and the beach clubs are. Christopher Issa built it, and the naming tells you what he was after: the restaurants are called Rocksteady and Roots Rock, the brand grew out of the Jamaican word criss, and the design leans on local art rather than on resort neutrality.

Why It Works

We kept S Hotel because it solves the main complaint about the format. All inclusive usually means a compound and a week of the same four buffets, whereas here the package sits inside a working town, with three restaurants that are genuinely different from each other and a beach strip full of alternatives ten steps away. The scale helps: a hundred and twenty rooms is small enough that the staff are not processing crowds, large enough to carry a rooftop pool, a proper spa and a bar programme. The awards it collects year after year, including national hotel of the year recognition, are earned on service rather than on square footage.

Why This Location

Jimmy Cliff Boulevard is the Hip Strip, the stretch of Montego Bay that runs along the water and holds Doctor’s Cave Beach, the best known swimming beach in the city. Being on it means the town is the hotel’s amenity: bars, restaurants, shops and live music are within a walk rather than a taxi.
