Catcha Falling Star

Cottages Named After Bananas, Above the Sea

Catcha Falling Star is arranged as a small settlement rather than a building. Suites and cottages are placed through planting on the West End cliff, each with its own character, its own outlook and its own degree of seclusion, and the annex known as Banana Yaad carries the naming convention to its logical end with Plantain Cottage and Blue Java Cottage. Nothing is stacked, nothing is repeated, and the walk from a room to the restaurant goes through the garden rather than down a corridor. It is a property assembled over time, which is why it reads the way it does.

Why It Works

We kept this address for three reasons. The first is the restaurant: Ivan’s serves the road as well as the guests, which on this coast is the difference between a hotel kitchen and a kitchen that has to compete. The second is the adults only policy on twenty seven keys, a combination that produces genuine quiet rather than the advertised kind. The third is that every unit is different, so a stay here can be repeated without being the same, and returning guests tend to graduate from one cottage to another.

Why This Location

The West End is the cliff half of Negril, south of the roundabout and along the road to the lighthouse, and the address sits in its middle stretch. Swimming happens off the rock rather than from sand, sunsets are the fixed appointment of the day, and the bars along the same road handle the evening for anyone who wants to move. Seven Mile Beach is fifteen minutes north when sand is the requirement. Sangster International in Montego Bay is around ninety minutes by road and taxis wait at the terminal.

Plantain, Blue Java and the Rest of the Garden

Choosing a room here is a real decision rather than a formality, because the units differ in size, layout and exposure. Some sit close to the water with the sea filling the window, others are set back in the planting where the shade is deeper and the noise from the road is gone entirely. The Banana Yaad annex holds the cottages that repeat guests ask for by name. Say what matters to you when you book, whether that is the sunset line, a kitchen, a bigger terrace or complete quiet, and the property will place you.

Ivan’s, Open to the Road

Ivan’s is the reason people who are not staying here know the name. Open air, cut into the cliff with the Caribbean below, it runs from breakfast through to candlelit dinner on Jamaican cooking made with produce from the parish. Being open to outside diners changes the character of the room: it fills with a mix of guests and locals, the service has to hold up under scrutiny, and dinner feels like an evening out rather than an obligation included in the rate.

The Cliff, the Sunset and the Massage Table

The rhythm here is set by the light. Mornings belong to the water off the rock and the garden, afternoons to the shade, and the hour before sunset to whichever ledge you have claimed, because the West End faces due west and the show is reliable. Massages are given outdoors in private spaces on the cliff, which is more memorable than any treatment room, and there is nothing else scheduled. This is a hotel for people who intend to do very little, in a part of Negril that makes that easy.
