Moon Palace Jamaica
We loved the sheer sweep of it. A beachfront estate on the edge of Ocho...
Runaway Bay is the stretch of the north coast that the tour buses pass through on their way somewhere else, which is precisely its advantage. Cardiff Hall is the old estate name on the hill behind it, and the hotel takes that name and a piece of that ground. Four two storey blocks, forty four rooms, gardens between them, and the sea below. Nothing about the architecture shouts. The property calls itself a closely guarded secret, which is the sort of claim a hotel usually fails to earn, and here is mostly fair: people find it by recommendation rather than by billboard.
The north coast is dominated by properties of several hundred rooms where the day is programmed for you. This is the counter proposal. Forty four rooms means the staff learn your name by the second morning. Every room has a balcony, the categories differ by size and outlook rather than by tier of entitlement, and the restaurant is run as a restaurant rather than as a buffet hall. Add a spa and a position between the two north coast airports, and it becomes the rare Jamaican hotel that works for a week and for a single night alike.
Cardiff Hall sits just inland of Runaway Bay, in Saint Ann, on the road that runs the length of the north coast. Both north coast airports, the large one at Montego Bay and the small one east of Ocho Rios, are within about three quarters of an hour, which is a rare thing to say of anywhere in Jamaica. Ocho Rios and Dunn River Falls lie east, the Saint Ann beaches are below, and the golf course carrying the Cardiff Hall name is close by. It is a base rather than a destination, and it is honest about that.
Price: Premium
Vibe: Discreet, gardened, grown up, quietly celebratory
Rooms: Forty four across four two storey blocks, Deluxe and Ultra Deluxe, private balcony with garden or ocean outlook
Best For: Couples, small weddings and family celebrations, corporate groups, first or last nights on the island
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: The piano in the evening, which turns the cocktail hour into an actual hour rather than a queue at a bar
Dining: Isabella, a gourmet dining room built on a fusion of Jamaican and international cooking
Amenities: Spa, swimming pool, gardens, lounges, business centre, event and celebration spaces
Attractions: Runaway Bay and the Saint Ann coast, Ocho Rios and Dunn River Falls east, the Cardiff Hall golf course, both north coast airports within about forty five minutes
The room list is refreshingly short: Deluxe and Ultra Deluxe, with the difference showing in space and in what the balcony looks at. Garden rooms are the shaded, quieter choice, and the ocean facing ones are the ones to ask for if the stay is more than a night. The two storey blocks keep everything close to the ground and close to the planting, so there is no lift, no corridor of doors and no lobby to cross. It reads much more like a set of pavilions in a garden than like a hotel with a reception desk.
The dining room is the centre of the evening here. The kitchen works a fusion of Jamaican and international cooking, and it is run with ambition rather than as an amenity, which is what separates a hotel you eat in from one you eat at. The bar leans to cocktails, and a piano plays, which sets a pace that suits the property. In a part of the island where dinner usually means deciding whether to drive, a table worth sitting down at on site is worth more than a long list of facilities.
The spa is the amenity guests name when they explain why they stayed longer than planned. Between it, the pool and the gardens, the property is designed for a day spent inside its own walls, which is not the usual north coast proposition. There is a business centre for anyone combining work with the coast, and the event spaces handle small weddings and celebrations, a natural fit for a house of this size. Book it for the quiet, and treat the coast excursions as the optional part.

What we like about this one is how little it has changed. Jamaica Inn has...
Our pick here comes down to provenance. GoldenEye is the estate Ian Fleming built above...
