The House Where James Bond Was Written

Ian Fleming bought this piece of the Oracabessa coast after the war, built a low white house above a private cove, and wrote the Bond novels there, one a year, in the winters. Chris Blackwell, who founded Island Records, bought the estate afterwards and turned it into the anchor of his Island Outpost collection without scrubbing out what it had been. That history is still the organising principle. The main house stands where it always did, the gardens have grown into the property rather than being landscaped onto it, and the tone across the estate is closer to a private house party than a hotel operation.

Why It Works

We kept GoldenEye because very few hotels anywhere can offer a guest a piece of twentieth century culture to sleep in. The Fleming house is bookable, the lagoon is the centre of daily life rather than a photograph, and the Blackwell ownership has kept the music industry connection alive in a way that shows in the bars and in who you meet at them. The estate is also properly varied: beach huts, cottages on the water and villas on the sand let a couple, a family and a group of eight book the same address without getting in each other’s way.

Why This Location

Oracabessa sits on the north coast in Saint Mary, east of Ocho Rios and well clear of the cruise ship traffic. The estate has its own water on three fronts: Low Cay with its white sand, the smaller Button Beach, and the lagoon in the middle. Firefly, the hilltop house where Noel Coward lived and is buried, is a short drive and one of the best views on the island. The small airstrip at Boscobel, named after Fleming, is minutes away, while Montego Bay is roughly two hours west by road.

Beach Huts, Lagoon Cottages and the Fleming Villa

The three categories are genuinely different holidays. Beach huts are freestanding and built for indoor outdoor living, raised to catch the breeze and the view. Lagoon cottages give direct water access, a private dock and a kayak, which is the option repeat guests defend most loudly. Beach villas are the larger standalone houses on sand or lagoon front, with hardwood floors, high ceilings and oversized furniture built for heat rather than for photographs. Above all of them sits the Fleming Villa, taken by families and groups who want the whole story.

Four Bars, One Gazebo and a Jerk Pit

Eating here is spread across the estate rather than concentrated in a dining room. Bizot Bar handles lunch on the beach with salads, burgers and Jamaican plates. The Gazebo is the evening room, set between the beach and the lagoon and timed for the sunset. Shabeen mixes cocktails with a rooftop lounge near Snorkeler’s Cove. The Bamboo Bar on Button Beach is the loosest of them, rum, jerk barbecue and whatever came out of the water that morning.

The Field Spa and the Lagoon

The Field Spa works from plant based recipes, with botanical elixirs and essential oils produced on the estate, which puts it a long way from the standard resort treatment menu. The lagoon is the other half of the wellness proposition, warm, sheltered and swimmable at any hour, with kayaks lying along its edge. Add the reef offshore for snorkelling and the tennis court under the trees, and the estate covers a stay without ever requiring a car.
