The Liguanea Club
What won us over here is the anomaly: a walled green block of lawns, old...
Lady Musgrave Road runs along the eastern edge of New Kingston, and the hotel takes six acres of it, which is a great deal of ground for a city property. That surface is what you feel first: a set back entrance, room for a pool and a lawn, and a sense of air around the building that uptown Kingston rarely offers. Inside, the register is contemporary and Spanish in origin, since this is a brand born in Spain before it joined an American group. The result is a large hotel that behaves like a considered one, in the middle of the district where the capital does business.
Kingston asks a specific question of a hotel: can it deliver the same night, every night, to someone arriving tired. With more than two hundred rooms, a fitness centre, meeting space and three places to eat and drink under one roof, the answer here is yes, and it is delivered without the heaviness that usually comes with scale. The design does the rest. Rooms are stripped of the ornament a business hotel normally accumulates, and what remains is placed where a traveller actually reaches for it. Reliability is an underrated luxury in a capital city.
New Kingston is the safest and most walkable quarter of the capital, and Lady Musgrave Road sits on its quieter side, a few minutes from Knutsford Boulevard and its offices, restaurants and bars. Emancipation Park is close enough to walk to for the morning circuit. Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road and the National Gallery downtown are all short drives, and Norman Manley International Airport is around seventeen kilometres away across the harbour. For anyone continuing into the Blue Mountains, the road up through Papine starts on this side of the city.

The brand argument is that a room improves when things are taken out of it. In practice that means clean surfaces, a bed with space around it, storage that does not announce itself, and sockets placed where a traveller reaches rather than where a builder found it easy. Categories climb from the entry rooms up through larger and higher floor options, and the difference is mostly space and outlook. For a stay of several nights, ask for a floor high enough to see past the neighbouring roofs toward the hills, which changes the room at both ends of the day.
Three places to eat and drink, each with a clear job. AC Kitchen handles breakfast in a European register, which on this island is a genuine alternative to the full Jamaican plate. The lounge is the centre of the building, Spanish in inspiration, serving tapas and cocktails, and doubling through the day as the place where people work in company. The pool bar is the quieter option, outdoors, with the island in view. Between them they cover most of what a guest needs without leaving the grounds, which in a city where dinner often means a drive is a practical advantage.
The meeting and event space is the reason a good share of the guests are here at all, and it is sized for corporate Kingston rather than for a handful of laptops. A business centre backs it up, and the fitness centre is proper rather than token. The grounds help: there is room to walk between sessions, which is not something most city hotels can offer. Combined with the address, it makes the hotel a plausible base for a week of work rather than a single night between flights.
